Kunstakademie Sint Joost
Wernher Bouwens studied etching, lithography and silkscreen printing at the « Kunstacademie Sint Joost » in Breda (Netherlands) from 1989 to 1994, finishing with a concentration in drawing.
Atelier Michael Woolworth
In September 1994, he started in a printshop as a lithographer and printer working under art-editor Michael Woolworth. Here, Bouwens was able to develop themes of materiality in his work, using the printshop itself as a tool which defines the creative process. His first project in publishing entitled NOMADES (1995-1998).
À fleur de Pierre
In 1999, he started the publishing venture « ÉTINCELLE » with Etienne de Champfleury and Laurence Lépron at the « À Fleur de Pierre » printshop in Paris. They published 23 artistbooks in 6 years time.
Quimper
In 2002, he was appointed as a professor at the « École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Cornouaille » in Quimper, where he taught printing and editing through 2006.
ENSAD
In 2004, Bouwens became a professor at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, where for 5 years he taught in the department « Image Imprimée » and supervised students working toward their diplomas.
ENSBA
Bouwens continues to teach printmaking at ENSBA in Paris where he started in 2006. In his studio, each student is encouraged to develop concepts in relation to the mechanics of publishing, lending to the creation of "printed matters" and taking different original formes prompted by the process itself.
Atelier rue de l’Abbé Carton
In September 2009, he opened his studio in Paris where he devotes his time to painting, printing and drawing.

o about the work
Editing, as a set of operations that lead to printed works, represents an infinite field of possibilities of which the adaptation can be imagined and aimed towards any artistic intentions.
I made the choice of painting “dynamic” work, in which different forces provoke movement, an evolution inside a structure in development. My paintings function as screens, as echoes and as modulations of frequencies. Emotion and artistic expression are inherent to the event and the act of painting.
Investing the field of painting based on processes specific to printmaking and editing, I paint the printed matter, simple forms, halftone patterns, with a limited pallet of four colours.
I kept the colour orange, used for life jackets and road signals. In opposition, I’ve chosen green and I added blue. Colours are applied one over the other, without ever mixing physically. In assembling those colours and their various shades, other colours appear, such as a whole range of ochre.
With superimposing several layers of dots, movements and numerous images appear, and the surface livens up.
The use of enlarged halftone dots opposes my work to communication technologies that have always been striving to repress what is inherent in their own medium : the grain of photography, the woven grid of photoengraving, the photogram of cinematography, the electrons of television. In my paintings, the patterns are freehandedly painted, one dot after the other.
Each element of my work is necessarily part of a system of correlations or oppositions. The purpose is defined the moment these various elements establish connections in unpredictable ways : the unexpected arises, chance, occurrence and surprise define the image. This induces a strong interest in everything related to the accident in creating, considered as a random existential event.
Through the exploration of screens of dots, ways of processing, changes of value and in-between spaces, and by operating passageways of harmony and dissonance, I shift the question of reality into the territory of drawing, painting and printmaking. By searching for the limits of painting, I develop a certain awareness, more by intuition than by will, of new realities.
I keep on creating extended surfaces, interlacing oppositions, looking for visual tensions and avoiding any system of subjective interpretation. After a modernist period which has widely favoured purity, today’s system, going through a deep crisis in several domains, encourages fiction. In my recent works, the stake of reality proliferates through irregularities and anomalies. It closely tends to heterogeneousness and mixing. My paintings are no longer recognizable out of one unique model governing all the experience. I try hard to establish a new relation to the world in every painting, to induce an absence of principles and to confront complex, multiple visions.
In drawings, I cover the surface with several grids of circles drawn with a compass. By the superimposing of grids, their circles overlap and divide themselves in fragments. Every fragment is individually coloured. The logics of colouring vary from one part of the drawing to another and create a tension between the various zones of the motive.
In my etched works, the printing is completely part of the creative process. The images are developed in the printing studio. They are the result of a superimposing of printing matrixes, sometimes in a random way. I use the specific qualities of the different materials at hand (paper and ink), different printing techniques and the qualities of the printing studio itself. Edition allows me to vary the results, as so many possibilities of pretending.
I open my books to other artists. Editing is also a medium of exchange and encounters. Group projects punctuate my practice, going beyond, in a way, the usual mode of solitary creation.

These jam-sessions of printmaking with two different presses gave birth to one individual print per artist (98 × 138 cms / reliefprint / 2014 / 10 copies) 156 different collective prints (98 × 138 cms / reliefprint / 2014 / unique copies) and a collectif artist book(see portfolios and books).
